While those who had the opportunity to be involved in bringing Middle-earth to life and turned it down may well have their regrets nowadays, the great thing about being a part of the fandom is that you never have to feel that kind of remorse. In fact, meme culture dictates that everybody who is on their billionth rewatch and may or may not be a wannabe Hobbit is automatically an integral part of what LOTR means today, because they have the potential to contribute to all the silly jokes on the internet that keep it in the public discussion.
Of course, we can argue that a cultural artefact that is as iconic as this doesn't need a bunch of memes to make it eternally relevant, but it can't be denied that it helps. It is also a testament to the strength of the source material that LOTR memes continue to flourish as one of the most important internet humor subcultures.
